چکیده

In this paper, we discuss ethnographic fieldwork as a research technique for user centred design in the industry. We take a look at the original meaning of fieldwork in ethnography, and discuss how ethnographically inspired fieldwork can enrich research and data gathering in a participatory design setting. The ethnographer in his field seeks to ‘go native’. But in an industrial setting there is neither time nor ressources for prolonged engagement with users. Is there a ‘quick and dirty’ version of ‘going native’? We present five cases of video based research techniques from our own practice as examples of a participant observation research strategy, and discuss how it is possible to move beyond observation. The ethnographer seeks to understand the world as it is. The designer wants to change it through introducing new products. Is there a way to study the changes to come? Of involving users in design in their own work context? We will introduce what we have termed ‘Design-in-Context’ through two cases of user involvement.

Multisited Design: An Analytical Lens for Transnational HCI

In this article, we present and articulate the analytical lens of multisited design to illuminate transnational connections between sites of design, and aid in the translation of knowledge between designers and ethnographers. This position emerges from the authors’ respective engagements in ethnographic research and design engagements with a slum community center in Bangkok, Thailand, and with ...

Epidemic Suicide in a Lahu Community: Converging Qualitative and Quantitative Methods

This article explores an epidemic of love-suicide in a Lahu community of southwest China in the 1950s. Suicide’s rarity and the methodological constraints of ethnographic fieldwork have severely hampered attempts to understand suicide cross-culturally. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods in a longitudinal fieldwork study provides insights regarding the patterns of suicide in a m...

ارزیابی و رتبه بندی اهمیت نسبی الزامات فنی محصول با تلفیق مدلهای QFD و DEA: مطالعه موردی (صنایع کاشی و سرامیک)

This article aims to evaluate the relative importance of product design requirements in Quality Function Deployment (QFD) environment taking customer needs and producers constraints. Considering the matrix of QFD, we can take the customers needs into consideration only. However, we present a technique that can take into account the production constraints in the product design process as well as...

Problematizing the Field: Theorizing Spatial Volatility in Ethnographic Fieldwork

The purpose of this paper is to problematize the idea of the ethnographic field that is usually taken for granted in Information Systems (IS) field research. The field is the touchstone of reality which the ethnographer encounters yet it is often thought of something fixed and merely ‘out there’ where the ethnographer goes to conduct the research. However, recent advances in anthropological sch...
